What Is The Difference Between Dry Needling And Acupuncture?

While both dry needling and acupuncture use thin needles, they are two completely different practices based on different medical philosophies and have different goals.

THE PURPOSE

Dry needling is a modern, Western medicine technique used by physical therapists to treat muscular pain and dysfunction. Its primary purpose is to release muscle knots, reduce muscle tension, and restore proper function. The needles are inserted directly into a taut band of muscle or a "trigger point" to get a twitch response and encourage the muscle to relax.

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that has been practiced for thousands of years. Its purpose is to balance the flow of energy, or "Qi," in the body by placing needles along specific pathways called meridians. The goal is to promote overall health and wellness, not necessarily to treat a specific muscle or joint problem.

THE PHILOSOPHY

Dry needling is rooted in scientific evidence and modern anatomy. Physical therapists use their knowledge of the muscular and nervous systems to guide the treatment. They are targeting specific anatomical points to restore muscle function.

Acupuncture is based on the ancient principles of TCM. The needles are placed at points on the body's energy channels with the goal of restoring balance to the body's systems.
