FAQS

Your Questions Answered

Can a physical therapist diagnose EDS?

No. A physical therapist can screen for hypermobility and recognize patterns that may suggest EDS or hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD), but a formal diagnosis comes from a physician. If you’re seeking a diagnosis, we can point you toward programs and doctors who may be able to help, including the Ehlers-Danlos Society’s provider directory.

Do I need an EDS diagnosis to start physical therapy?

No. Many patients begin care while they’re still working toward a diagnosis. Treatment is based on how your body moves and what you’re experiencing.

Should I stretch if I’m hypermobile?

Usually, stretching isn’t the answer for hypermobile joints. Stretching often feels really good in the moment, but that relief tends to fade quickly. Tightness in hypermobile bodies often comes from muscles working overtime to protect loose joints. As Courtney tells her patients, “If it feels good for a short time, then you need to strengthen.” Building strength and joint control helps those muscles relax because they no longer have to do all the protecting.

Can I exercise if I have POTS?

In many cases, yes, with the right starting point. We build your plan around how you’re feeling and where your strength is right now, then adjust it as you go. Exercise often begins in lying or seated positions and progresses gradually as your body tolerates it. Always check with your physician about your POTS management.

How often will I need to come in?

EDS and hypermobility care is usually a longer journey, but it doesn’t have to mean appointments every week. Visits are often spaced four to six weeks apart, which gives your body time to build strength between sessions. In between, you’ll work on your home program, and Courtney stays in touch by text or email to adjust it as needed. If you have a flare, a setback, or need more hands-on care, we can see you sooner. Your plan is built around how you’re feeling and where your strength is.

Does Cash-Based Actually Cost More? Let's Do The Math.

This is the question every family asks, and it deserves an honest answer.

The Insurance Model: What You Think You Are Paying

A $30 copay sounds simple. But here is what most families do not realize:

  • High Deductibles: Many insurance plans carry a deductible of $1,000 to $3,000 per year

  • Contracted Rates Out of Pocket: Until that deductible is met, you often pay the clinic's contracted rate out of pocket, commonly $150 or more per visit.

  • High Frequency: A orthopedic injury may require 10 to 12+ visits at 2 to 3 times per week.

  • Split Attention: At many insurance-based clinics, your 60-minute appointment is split between a physical therapist and a tech or aide for the rest

  • Arbitrary Caps: Insurance can limit how many visits you are approved for.

  • Example: 12 visits at an in-network clinic

    • Your deductible is $1,500, and the clinic’s rate is $150 per visit.

    • Visits 1 through 10: you pay the full $150 each until your deductible is met. That’s $1,500.

    • Visits 11 and 12: your deductible is met, so you pay a $50 copay each. That’s $100.

    • Your total: $1,600, plus 12 trips to the clinic, often 2 to 3 times a week.

The CD Physical Therapy Model: What You Are Actually Getting

  • $175 per visit: A full 60 minutes, 100% one on one with your physical therapist every time

  • Faster Results: Because every minute is focused, many orthopedic patients complete care in fewer visits

  • Example Total: 6 visits x $175 = $1,050 total

  • No deductible surprises: Clear, upfront pricing with zero unexpected bills.

  • No Referral Delay: Direct access allows you to start care sooner

  • Pre-Tax Savings: HSA and FSA dollars apply, so you can pay with pre-tax money

  • Reimbursement Potential: You receive a superbill you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.

The bottom line: If your deductible has not been met, you may pay less at CD Physical Therapy than at an in-network clinic while getting more focused, one-on-one care. And for patients with EDS, hypermobility, or complex conditions, getting the right care early can save years of trial, error, and unnecessary expense.
